The difference between dolls and action figures

When I was little I had a Mr. T doll. I would make him talk all tough and serious as he proclaimed what fool he currently pitied. I’m guessing everyone has it figured out that I am a girl, though, right? I mean, what self respecting GUY calls Mr. T a “doll’? My brother would have choked on his blueberry pop tart had I been so foolish as to suggest Barbie have a rendezvous with his GI Joe “dolls”.

So, why the big controversy? You see, action figures are, for the most part, tough guys or monsters. You don’t really see a whole lot of cuddling going on with them, which is why the term doll is so revolting to little boys (and big boys too) because they do not want anyone to think they are trying to kiss all over Optimus Prime. Dolls are sweet and cuddly and are not necessarily made of plastic like action figures are. Dolls are to be cared for and cooed at, while action figures are for setting in the dirt with a firecracker or two.

There are also the adult brand of figures that are expensive collectible items. These are for looks only and God help the unfortunate soul which dares to ask “Who’s toys?” So, does this mean little boys can’t have dolls? Certainly not, though I think you can be certain that your little man is growing up the day he exclaims with overzealous dignity that you have sat on his action figure.

I think it is safe to say that if a toy is in the could go either way’ department you ought to follow the example of the child. I believe the way the toy is treated really determines what to call it. WAS the beloved Mr. T actually an ACTION FIGURE? Hmmm. Well, I suppose, technicallyyes. However, in my heart, the excess “bling” and the Mohawk will forever remain a cuddly image.
