Michael Bay: Destroying our childhoods? – Part 3

Both articles here bring up valid points. I, personally, agree more with the first one since I have already seen the movie and did not enjoy it as much as I would have liked. Transformers was a great cartoon. Like the previous author said, it had great plot, interesting, well-developed characters, and engaging action. Even the villains were cool. In comparison to today’s cartoons, which garble mindless nonsense to children to make them stupid, Transformers was awesome!

But how can you conceivably stick over six years of cartoons into a two hour movie? It’s impossible, which is why I knew I was going to be disappointed. Of course, the computer graphics and the action sequences were amazing. That’s as far as it went for me. The military involvement in the first act of the movie was unnecessary. Movies have enough propaganda as it is. We don’t need half an hour of constant military brainwashing. Their removal would have left more time for the boy to interact with the Robots. Optimus Prime doesn’t come out until the middle of the movie. WHAT WAS THAT! There was hardly any character development for the Robots. You don’t feel for them. Jazz died. That’s supposed to be a BIG deal and yet in the movie it was like “Oh he died.” If you blinked you would have missed it. So in agreement with the first author, the movie completely ruined the cartoon, but to agree with the second author what movie hasn’t done that these days? If you’re a hardcore fan of a book series or a particular cartoon, don’t go see the movie. Save yourself the misery because nine out of ten times you WILL be disappointed.

(Rainn Wilson).

Movie reviews: The Transformers (2007) – Part 62

If you born between the late 60’s and the mid 90’s, Transformers is the best movie ever made. Also we must not forget the original cartoon was a phenomenal new type of animation in the early 80’s and the newer versions such as “Beast Wars” and “Transformers Energon” as well as mini-movies such as “The Ultimate Battle”, kept the dream alive and opened up interest in younger generations of fans. Never in my life have I seen such seamless integration of live action and C.G.I. Yes we all know computer graphics have been around for years and that they keep getting better and better but up till now every other movie with good graphics was just that, a movie in which the visuals were merely good. Now they have all been knocked down a couple notches and nothing is in second place, for the time being. I will admit that the story needed work but I know no one could have done any better then Michael Bay considering that the transformers movie was the first in a series of no less than three and as all firsts go it had to be an introduction of the main characters and their reasons for being on earth so that those moviegoers that have never even heard of “Optimus Prime” or “Megatron” would get to know them and catch up with the rest of us who have had transformers as a part of our lives since birth or at least childhood or even young adulthood, hence the 3 decades I mentioned at the beginning. Despite the basic storyline it is still the best movie ever made until we see the sequel.

Transformers – $8

Transformers is everything it needed to be, action packed, fun, childish and quite funny.

I was worried when I heard Michael Bay was making the live action version of my favorite childhood cartoon, as I find Bay normally sacrifices story for image and leaves his characters poorly developed and with little to do but look good on screen. Transformers may have been just the right project for Bay however as no one can honestly expect this movie – based on a cartoon which was based on a toy – to tell an epic story or have a moving dramatic back story. Bay provides his audience with just what the cartoon always did, funny dialogue and over the top action.

I’m sure some purists will find the modernization of the Transformers too much to take. I thought it was appropriate and as cheesy as the GMC product shots were the movie makers stayed true to the essence of each character. For me any inconsistencies with the original were overlooked as soon as I heard the familiar sound of Optimus Prime’s voice in the opening narration.

I enjoyed Transformers immensely, it was great fun to watch these toys come to life again in a live action movie with some of the best CGI I’ve ever seen. This movie will win no acting or writing awards but if you have ever been a fan of this implausible story then you shouldn’t have any trouble being entertained by the big screen version.

Watch for Shia LaBeouf’s career to take off as well, he carries much of the story, and especially the comedy in Transformers, playing the movie’s main character Sam. Sam is the young man whose Father unwittingly buys him an Autobot from a used car lot.

Overall this is not a perfect movie nor is it a movie for those who don’t like senseless action and were never fans of the Transformers. It is however wonderful fun and worth seeing. I’m sure there will now be a whole new generation of Transformers fans that will finally understand what all those 30 year old geeks like me are talking about.

I put Transformers on my ‘Watch It’ list and give it a value of $8.

Movie reviews: The Transformers (2007) – Part 43

The Transformers movie. Where do I start? I guess I’ll start with what was good about it. The Autobots (or GM) vs. the Decepticons (or Ford) both looked cool. The vehicles where cool, the planes and helicopters where cool, they transformed cool. The film was pumped stock full of cool. The old fanboys had their issues; Octimus Prime now has flames on his truck, Bubble Bee is now a sleak new camero, no longer a VW bug and Megatron is a jet now and no longer a big gun, to name just a few. The real problem here was Michael Bay. The guy goes way overboard, by the end of the movie there is so much destruction and chaos, that you no longer knew what they were all fighting for in the first place, and if you did, by then you just didn’t care. The question is what do we really expect here. It’s about machines that transform into machines for our viewing pleasure. Hey, and it looked cool.

Movie previews: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – Part 1

Not due out at the cinemas until June 2009, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” is a movie which all science fiction fans of the world will most definitely be eagerly anticipating. After the success of “Transformers” in 2007, audiences now know to expect special effects of an exceptional standard and a fine storyline to boot. Once more the movie is to be directed by Michael Bay, produced by Spielberg, and written by a wonderful team of three. The writers this time around are those of Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Ehren Kruger (only Ehren Kruger was not involved with the writing process of the first film, and here replaces John Rogers in the role of third writer). The film shall again star Shia LaBeouf, and for all those that enjoyed the first movie then it’s time to once more prepare for something truly special.

Apparently we can expect the tone of this second movie to be very similar to that of the first; this time round however writer Roberto Orci has stated that rather than seeing things from a human perspective as opposed to a robot perspective; things will be much more evenly balanced (he announced this on the Don Murphy internet forum). It’s to be a very interesting second Transformer telling, and this time round it has also been announced that the plot progression will be far more flowing than it was with the first film.

It definitely seems as though it’s to be an improvement upon the original “Transformers” film, and as the release date draws ever closer I’m sure that we’ll find out far more about the movie and a lot more will be revealed. It has more or less the same team behind it and with a great cast again I see no reason why this second Transformers movie should not outshine the first. The first film was very good, this time around it seems as though all those involved are even more on the ball however and are working to make 2009s Transformers movie an even greater offering than the last.

$8 million has here been shelled out in order to get the three writers on board alone. A lot of money is going into this movie and everyone involved is doing their utmost to make sure that this movie is as amazing as it possibly can be. A lot of money is being spent, the best professionals possible are being employed to make sure that the movie shines, and in every area director Michael Bay is looking to impress with the “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” movie.

I’ve always been a great fan of Shia LaBeouf and very much look forward to witnessing his involvement within this second Transformers movie; he’s just one of a number of talented cast members that will here be involved however and I’m sure that all those cast within this movie will be absolutely exceptional in their roles.

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” looks set to be the movie to see in summer 2009, it has a very big budget and it’s excellent to see that all those involved are doing their very best to make sure that the movie does not disappoint. The first movie was brilliant, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” looks all set to outshine it strongly however and when the movie sees its release in June 2009 I am entirely sure that it will astound and amaze all those that see it. “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” will most definitely be a hugely exciting movie, and all I’ve now got left to say on the matter is roll on summer 2009!
